PRESS RELEASE
Social isolation and lack of human connection pose serious health risks for older adults. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), seniors who are socially isolated face up to a 50% higher risk of developing dementia. In Chicago, data shows that about one in four older adults experience significant social isolation, which increases their chances of hospitalization and negatively impacts their emotional well-being.
Research also links loneliness to heart disease, depression, and cognitive decline. Experts agree that creating opportunities for seniors to connect and stay active is not only beneficial—it’s essential for their health.
In Chicago, several programs are helping older adults stay engaged and socially active. One of them is Home CreArte, sponsored by the nonprofit Home Care AUAF. The program offers free classes in art, crafts, knitting, and crochet every Friday in the Logan Square neighborhood.
Participants can talk, socialize, and express their creativity in a welcoming environment that supports mental health, motor skills, and cognitive activity.
