There are few better places to be in the summer than the city of Chicago. Starting in May, the city comes to life with a wide variety of events for those of all ages to enjoy—including seniors! Whether a music lover, a foodie, or an art enthusiast, Chicago is home to a myriad of festivals and summer activities to enjoy all summer long. For those looking for summer events for seniors in the Chicago area, consider these options.
Music festivals
Chicago is home to some of the most renowned music festivals in the world, including Lollapalooza. While the scale of that music event may be too much for many older adults, there are many smaller, more relaxed events seniors can enjoy.
Millennium Park is home to several incredible music events throughout the summer, but two of great note are the Chicago Blues Festival and the Millennium Park Music Series. From June 8 to 11, big names in blues music take to the Chicago Blues Festival for a weekend of packed performances. If attendees arrive early enough, they can reserve pavilion seating.
While the timing of the Blues Festival is more exclusive, the Millennium Park Summer Music Series takes place from June 22 to August 21. This series showcases a wide array of established and emerging musicians alike weekly. Both of the events are free and are on a first-come-first-serve basis.
To enjoy jazz on the water, consider heading to the Shedd Aquarium. Starting on June 7 and going until August 30, Jazzin at the Shedd gives attendees the opportunity to enjoy classic jazz while also experiencing the animals at the aquarium. This weekly event has a ticket price of $39.95, but it does include the price of aquarium admission.
Food festivals
For many people, it isn’t museums and music that comes to mind when they consider what Chicago is synonymous with—it’s the food. Chicago is a foodie’s paradise, making it a great location for a number of prominent food events throughout the summer.
Usher in the season of great food with the Lincoln Park Greek Fest. From June 2 to 4, experience authentic Greek food at one of the oldest Greek Orthodox churches in the city. In addition to great food, attendees can spend the evening listening to both modern and traditional Greek music.
On July 29 or 30, head to Chinatown for the Chinatown Summer Fair. In this celebration of Chinese culture, attendees can enjoy some of the best, authentic Chinese food in the area. The event would be great to bring grandchildren to, as there are activities and games for families of all sizes.
One of the most well-known events in the city is Taste of Chicago. While this doesn’t take place until September 8-10, this free, 40-year event gains serious crowds. Older adults will likely want to plan their visit ahead of time to ensure they have the accommodations they need.
Art fairs
For those who enjoy finding unique pieces of jewelry, photography, ceramics, or other forms of fine art, consider attending one of Chicago’s many art fairs. It seems like every weekend in the summer has a different art fair somewhere across the city.
One of the most recognized and oldest art fairs in the Midwest is the 57th Street Art Fair. Each year, 200 artists from across the country travel to Hyde Park to share their art, no matter the medium, with all types of individuals.
For those on the northwest side of the city, consider attending the Logan Square Arts Festival. From June 23 to June 25, dozens of local artisans set up shop to show off their work. This event also has two music stages, so if the noise is too much for you or your loved one, check the music schedules and plan your trip accordingly.
