Homebound Seniors Can Receive the COVID-19 Vaccine at Home

Seniors who live at home remain a highly at-risk group for COVID-19. Although the vaccine administration has accelerated greatly in recent months—with centers for vaccine administration opening in sports arenas, empty department stores, and even local taverns—many homebound seniors have faced challenges with access to vaccines. To address this issue, the Cook County Department of Public Health (CCDPH) has partnered with local organizations to bring the vaccine directly to homebound seniors.

Which Seniors Qualify for the COVID-19 Vaccine at Home Program?

Seniors in at-home care qualify for the program if they are:

  • 60 or older, OR
  • Have a disability, OR
  • Use adaptive equipment like a walker, wheelchair or ventilator, AND
  • Unable to leave the home because it is too difficult, AND
  • Live in Cook County (except Chicago, Evanston, Oak Park or Stickney. For those areas, see below)

Seniors can sign up to receive the vaccine from the CCDPH homebound vaccination effort by calling (833) 308-1988 or signing up for the vaccine online. A partner organization will contact you once you’ve registered, and they will schedule a visit for vaccine administration at your home. As with all COVID-19 vaccines, this program is available at no cost to seniors.

Seniors at Home in Chicago, Evanston, and Skokie can Also Get the Vaccine at Home

Because these municipalities have their own Health Departments, residents of these areas are not eligible for the CCDPH program. However, many have their own programs that are vaccinating seniors who are homebound. Skokie residents can call the Department of Health at (847) 779-7726 to set up an appointment for themselves or an elderly loved one.

In Evanston, homebound seniors can fill out this form to be contacted by the city for an appointment. And Chicago seniors who cannot leave home can contact the Protect Chicago Homebound program to receive the vaccine in their homes.

Illinois Seniors Outside Cook County Who Live at Home

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Illinois Department of Public Health recommend that seniors living outside Cook County contact their local public health department to find mobile vaccination programs. Many counties and municipalities are working through numerous requests, so seniors may experience some wait time before receiving the vaccine.

At-Home Care Can Help You Get Vaccinated

The process of getting the COVID-19 vaccine can be intimidating for seniors living at home. A professional caregiver can assist with managing the logistics, such as filling out forms or navigating the technology needed to schedule an appointment. With a caregiver’s help, seniors can have better access to vaccines and enjoy peace of mind.

The Importance of Staying Informed and Supported

As the world continues to adapt to the ongoing challenges posed by the pandemic, it’s essential that seniors and their families remain informed about the available resources, including access to vaccines and other healthcare services. Staying up to date on Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines and local health department updates ensures that seniors can receive the necessary healthcare support while maintaining their independence.

Additionally, working with an in-home caregiver provides not only practical assistance but also much-needed emotional support, helping to alleviate any stress or confusion that might arise during this time. A strong support system, coupled with reliable home health care, empowers seniors to continue living safely and comfortably in their own homes.
