Home Care AUAF Organizes Gardening Workshop for Seniors

On April 9, 2025, Home Care Powered by AUAF organized a vibrant gardening workshop for seniors, bringing springtime indoors with a heartwarming activity designed especially for older adults. Spearheaded by AUAF’s Polish Public Relations Associate, Karolina Kuzma, the event took place at the O’Hare Tech Center in Schiller Park and welcomed local seniors for an afternoon of planting, conversation, and connection.

With flower pots, rich soil, and blooming plants in hand, seniors came together to enjoy a hands-on experience that offered far more than a decorative plant to take home. The event reflected Home Care AUAF’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the quality of life for seniors through meaningful experiences that promote physical activity, social well-being, and independence.

Indoor Gardening: A Senior-Friendly Way to Stay Engaged

Gardening activity is not only a pleasant way to pass the time and it’s also highly beneficial for aging individuals. This senior friendly workshop provided a space where participants could reconnect with nature while enjoying the therapeutic value of working with their hands.

Research has shown the many benefits of gardening for seniors. Tactile activities like potting plants and arranging soil help improve motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Additionally, light tasks such as watering and planting promote gentle physical activity, making it a fun and accessible form of exercise that supports long-term physical health.

By offering an indoor setting, Home Care AUAF ensured all participants, regardless of mobility levels, could comfortably take part in the experience. Raised planting stations and adaptive tools were provided to ensure the activity remained inclusive and accessible for every family member in attendance.

Enhancing Social Interaction Through Shared Experiences

One of the most meaningful aspects of this event was the lively social interaction that blossomed alongside the flowers. Participants chatted over soil and petals, shared gardening tips, and connected through stories of past gardens and favorite flowers.

These moments of connection are essential for older adults, many of whom may live alone or experience reduced opportunities for socializing. Events like Home Care AUAF’s indoor flower planting class encourage community engagement, reduce feelings of isolation, and foster a sense of belonging – all key contributors to emotional and cognitive well-being.

As one attendee shared, “It’s the little things – getting out of the house, meeting people, doing something creative that really lift your spirits.”

Special Guest Appearance: Beauty Ambassador of Poland

Adding to the day’s excitement was a special appearance by Dominika Żak, the winner of the Beauty Ambassador of Poland title. Her presence brought a touch of glamour and inspiration to the afternoon as she spent time mingling with seniors, assisting with planting, and sharing warm words of encouragement.

Dominika’s participation underscored the importance of intergenerational appreciation and cultural celebration. It also reflected Home Care AUAF’s vision of creating inclusive events that uplift and empower all attendees.
